book club event guide for THE ARCTIC FURY!

If you got my last newsletter, you already know about this, but I just realized I hadn’t posted the link to the blog! Rectifying that with a quickness.

Sourcebooks put together this super-fantastic book club event guide for THE ARCTIC FURY and it is chock-full of goodness. Do you need an excerpt of the book so your book group can decide whether it’s for you? It’s in there. Does your book club like recipes for era-appropriate dishes you can eat and drink while discussing the book? Got you covered! Want to know more about the research and real-life women behind the fictional story the book tells? Yep, that too.

But enough about the thing: if you want the thing, here’s the thing.

yep, more virtual events!

Are there other things in life going on these days besides me having virtual events for THE ARCTIC FURY? Yes! But some days, does it feel like the events are non-stop? Also yes!

Would love for you to join me for one or all of the following, coming up soon. All require advance registration, so make sure you get that taken care of. (If you’re not the type to plan that far in advance, there are definitely events on the calendar you can just drop in on — check out the full list here.)

But specifically next week:

Tuesday, January 26 at 7pm — in virtual conversation with Marie Benedict (THE MYSTERY OF MRS. CHRISTIE) for Reads & Company, Phoenixville, PA. Details and registration here.

Wednesday, January 27 at 7pm — Murder at the Library live virtual author event featuring THE ARCTIC FURY. (Tidbits, trivia and more!) Register for the webinar here.

Thursday, January 28 at 7pm — in virtual conversation with Erica Wright (FAMOUS IN CEDARVILLE) for Union Ave Books, Knoxville, TN. (RSVP in advance by e-mail as requested here.)

And if you missed my chat with J’Nell Ciesielski for A Likely Story, you can catch that replay here. (Tartan! Research! Mutual admiration!)

A few cool highlights:

And there’s more! So much more. Check it all out here.

win the audiobook of THE ARCTIC FURY!

Exciting news for fellow audiobook fans! Sourcebooks and Recorded Books have partnered to give away 10 copies of the audiobook of THE ARCTIC FURY, beautifully narrated by Eva Kaminsky.

(When I was a freshly minted author, with The Magician’s Lie, I couldn’t handle listening to my audiobook. I was too worried I’d be editing it in my head as I went along, focusing on all the mistakes I’d made in my writing. It took me TWO YEARS to get up the courage to listen to it. Spoiler alert: it was fantastic, and I hardly second-guessed myself at all.)

(Now that I’ve got a few more years and a few more books under my belt, how long did it take me to start listening to the audiobook of The Arctic Fury? A couple days at most. And it, too, rocked.)

THE ARCTIC FURY at Bas Bleu!

I’m pretty sure I’ve waxed poetic here before about how, for years, I’ve loved going through the Bas Bleu catalog before the holidays, picking out Christmas presents for my mom and circling a few ideas for myself. Now I’m utterly tickled to see my books in their pages — both the paper catalog and the online version.

And they’re giving a warm welcome to THE ARCTIC FURY! Not only is my chilly new novel available for purchase, it’s also listed at the top of their 2021 Winter Reading List and included in a fabulous five-book Winter Reading Collection with other great historical fiction that centers women’s stories. (I’ve read The Book of the Little Axe and The Lions of Fifth Avenue and they’re both excellent.) Nabbed the pretty pretty photo from their Instagram to include below!

hear me talk about THE ARCTIC FURY at Top Shelf!

Hope your holidays are going great! If you need something to listen to while running errands, shopping (online or off), wrapping presents, or just relaxing in the evening with a glass of wine or hot cocoa (boy could we all use some relaxing,) I love how this podcast interview turned out for Top Shelf with Merrick Library.

Carol Ann and I talked about everything from epigraphs, to what I call the “flattening” of history, to women mountaineers, to my next project, The Five Queendoms — and much, much more. It’s a jam-packed half-hour!

THE ARCTIC FURY one of Kate Quinn's 20 Favorite Books of 2020!

Year-end lists are complex things for writers — it’s tempting to look at all the ones your book isn’t on and feel sad about it. (There are a nearly infinite number of occasions for writers to feel sad about our books, if we let ourselves.) But the ones our books are on — that’s always something to celebrate! And some are more exciting to celebrate than others.

Kate Quinn is one of my favorite historical fiction authors working today, and I know she reads a whoooooole lot, so seeing THE ARCTIC FURY on her end-of-year list of favorites — which is also a gift guide, and a fun one — was a real treat.

new review of THE ARCTIC FURY at SBTB!

I love Smart Bitches, Trashy Books, so you can imagine how delighted (but also nervous!) I was to see that they’d reviewed THE ARCTIC FURY. I clicked with a bit of trepidation. They do grades instead of stars, and when I saw the B+ at the top of the TAF review, I was thrilled! It’s a warm and glowing review with some well-articulated issues, so it’s exactly like getting a B+ from one of your favorite professors, the one whose scarves you covet and who gently critiques the first topic you propose for your final paper with a, “Well, that approach would be fine, but you can do so much better than fine, don’t you think?”

You should probably just read the whole thing — the reviewer does a great job of avoiding spoilers — but in the meantime, here’s a highlight:

I especially enjoyed the way the diversity of the group gradually reveals itself in terms of class, gender, sexuality, race, and other traits. It’s also a book that’s hard to review because the things I loved the most are spoilers. I liked the language and description, and felt I could really feel the tactile world around the women and see through their eyes.
