traveling without traveling this summer

Love this idea from BookPage -- "historical fiction for your staycation." As all readers know, good books help you go places without leaving your favorite chair! And of course I'm thrilled that GIRL IN DISGUISE is included as a recommended way to travel to 1850s Chicago.

Plus, the writeup is stellar. "Greer Macallister’s take on the life of Kate Warne, the first female Pinkerton detective, is a rollicking good time as well as an inspiring portrait of a forgotten American hero."

Summer Reading List at Bas Bleu...

For most of my teenage years, my mother and I would pass the Bas Bleu catalog back and forth, circling gift ideas for Christmas and birthdays -- for ourselves and each other. I was delighted to call her two years ago when my Sourcebooks sales contact told me that Bas Bleu would carry my first novel, THE MAGICIAN'S LIE, in their catalog.

I was even more delighted to call her today to tell her that not only is GIRL IN DISGUISE in the catalog this time around, it's one of just 12 Summer Reading List selections. Merci, Bas Bleu!

Just a super-quick post today: delighted that GIRL IN DISGUISE made the Chicago Public Library's list of June 2017 staff picks. Kate did some of her best work in Chicago, so it's simply perfect to have her story get some recognition there.

two months of Kate!

Well, GIRL IN DISGUISE has passed the two-month mark, and at the same time, it also hit 200 reviews and 600 ratings on Goodreads! Nice when these milestones cluster together!

how I became a detective

Writing fiction takes you in many directions. For my first novel THE MAGICIAN'S LIE I got to explore the world of stage magic, and how novelists are illusionists who work in words. For GIRL IN DISGUISE, about the first woman in the US to become a detective, I got to explore the similarities being being a detective and being a writer.

Here's an article about that process -- it's also a nice introduction to Kate Warne and how the story I tell about her in GIRL relates to the historical record... what there is of it.
